An extraordinary publication which took six years is truly the largest, densest art dealer's catalogue ever, weighing in at 26.5 kg or 58.5 lbs, including protective packaging. The reason for its extraordinary, ambitious scale is that every small and medium-sized work of old Chinese painting and calligraphy is illustrated lifesize and, in the case of at least more important handscrolls, in the format in which they were created. For large hanging scrolls we have been obliged to fall back on the time-honored approach of blown-up detail photographs, but almost without exception handscrolls, albums and fans are reproduced to actual scale and are virtually perfect for color and tone. That is the reason it has taken so long and ends up so big.

This volume is more or less a coherent survey of nearly all types of Ming and Ch'ing dynasty painting and calligraphy. It also incorporates a few Ming fans of considerably high quality and great beauty.

The 3 individual folios portray the works of:

  • Sun Ch'eng-Tse (1592 or 1593-1676)
  • Lan Ying (1585-1660's)
  • Hsu Lin (1462-1538).
