The Art Gallery of New South Wales houses one of the most important collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island art and culture. Its Yiribana gallery is the largest single space devoted to the permanent exhibition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture in the world. This is the first catalogue to survey the collection, dividing them into seven themes that help the reader understand the scope of their art and culture. The collection includes numerous bark paintings, paintings on wooden poles, wooden sculptures as well as works in different media by contemporary artists.
