This volume showcases the recently donated Japanese paintings in the Indianapolis Museum of Art, comprising works of 46 Japanese artists, including master painters Buson, Jakuchu, Sotatsu and Shohaku. These dramatic large-scale works represent the great diversity of styles and subjects associated with the Edo period. With this donation, the Indianapolis Museum of Art now holds one of finest collections of Edo paintings in America.

Money L. Hickman, a specialist in Japanese art and former member of the curatorial staff of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, provides a readable and lively survey of Japanese painters of the Edo period in this volume.
