This is a catalogue to accompany an exhibition of Sparkling Splendours: The Art of Ancient Chinese Carvings on Rock Crystal and Agate at the Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Authored by Roger Chow and edited by Lai Suk Yee. The 281 pieces of exhibits, dating from the Neolithic period to the Ming dynasty, are all drawn from the Taoshi Zhai Collection of Mr. Roger Chow. All carved in rock crystal and agate, a great variety of tools, adornments, utensils, pendants, plaques and miniature animals are fully illustrated in colour plates. Also included are two research papers, "Sparkling Splendours – The Art of Ancient Chinese Carvings on Rock Crystal and Agate" by Roger Chow and "From Agate and Rock Crystal Ornaments to the Study of Early Lapidary Standards and Grinding Materials" by Huo Youguang. With also an "Illustrated Table of Comparable Excavated Specimens" and a selected "Bibliography", this catalogue is an indispensable reference for the study of ancient Chinese rock crystals and agates.
