CARL SCHRAUBSTADTER AND JAPANESE PRINTS

The Robert Louis Mueller Family Collection

Claudia Brown and Laurie Petrie-Rogers

Carl W. Schraubstadter (1862-1947) was an avid collector of Japanese prints and also penned a short manual titled Care and Repair of Japanese Prints in 1948. He was among the ranks of many Americans who were profoundly fond of, and infuenced by the aesthetic qualities of ukiyo-e. His collection included over 4,000 prints by Hiroshige alone. The collection he amassed is a testament to his genuine admiration for this art form. Through his example, we can observe the history of how prints were aquired, cared for, and dispersed.
