Dao Qi: Spirit & Vessel

Master Artist and Teacher Shi Yuren and Seven Artists Among His First Generation of Students

Carla Coch

This book tells the story of master artist and teacher, Shi Yuren, active in Jingdezhen from 1956 until his death in a bicycle accident in 1996. Dedicated to Jingdezhen's porcelain heritage and exceptionally innovative as an artist, Shi Yuren helped found the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute and revitalize the city's reputation as China's porcelain center. He was a deeply respected scholar whose creative life moved from persecution in the late 1950's through hard-won triumph by the late 1970's. Dao yu Qi ~ Spirit & Vessel, the catalogue for an exhibition held in Jingdezhen from 9/16/04 to 10/16/04 celebrating 1,000 years since the city's founding, also features short bios and the work of 7 living preeminent Jingdezhen artists among the first of several generations of students taught by Shi Yuren.
