Sculpture in Silk

Costumes from Japan's Noh Theater

Edited by Ashley Milne-Tyte

Sculpture in Silk: Costumes from Japan’s Noh Theatre reveals the philosophical and historical significance of costuming from the Theatre and illustrates innovative weaving techniques, which reached their zenith during the Edo period. This exhibition includes 20 magnificent historic Noh costumes collected by the Yamaguchi Research Center which is renowned for its expertise in Noh costume production. The contemporary costumes, along with Noh masks and accessories, have been created by the Center using Edo-era methods. Located in the Shiga Prefecture of Japan, the Center has conducted extensive research on the patterns, dyes, silk threads, weaving, and production techniques initially used in creating these beautiful costumes. The Center's profound knowledge and expertise is demonstrated through photo panels, exhibition videos, and catalogues.
