The Alsdorf Collection of Japanese Paintings

Stephen Little

Although the Alsdorf Collection is internationally known for its holdings of Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian art, it also includes a rare and important group of Japanese paintings. This is the first public presentation of the Alsdorf Collection of Japanese paintings. The collection comprises works ranging in date from the Heian through Meiji periods, and includes a vast array of subjects and styles. The earliest works are rare Buddhist iconographical sketches from the twelfth century, and the latest paintings date from the turn of the last century. Some of the most famous painters in Japanese history are represented here, including the Muromachi period Zen ink painter Sesson Shukei (1504-1589); the Momoyama period artist and calligrapher Hon'ami Koetsu (1558-1637); the Edo period masters Kano Tan'yu (1602-1674), Hakuin Ekaku (1685-1768), Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754-1799), Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828), Suzuki Kiitsu (1796-1858), Uragami Gyokudo (1745-1820), and Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875); and the Meiji painter and master of lacquer work Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891).
